DENTAL IMPLANTS

If your teeth decay and fall out, your dentist may recommend dental implants (tooth implants). Or if you wear uncomfortable dentures, dental implants may be the right choice for you. The dental implant is an effective treatment to replace missing teeth. The use of implants is among the most significant advances in dentistry. It replaces the root of the tooth and has many advantages over other treatments. It provides your teeth with a natural look and restores your bite to its full strength.

The thought of having dental implants can be a daunting decision due to the long treatment process, which also includes surgery on your jaw. Therefore, before deciding where to get teeth implants we encourage you to have a complimentary consultation with Dr. Han. He can inform and guide you about all aspects of the treatment process, from dental implants costs to techniques like all-on-4 dental implants.

So, What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. A dental implant is a titanium screw that is drilled into the upper or lower jaw bone. It provides a strong structure for the replacement tooth that is placed over it. It holds the replacement tooth just like the natural tooth root. A single tooth or a full arch of teeth can be placed over dental implants. The dental implant is made from titanium because this material is compatible with bone and oral tissues.

When is Dental Implant Treatment Needed?

Your dentist may recommend dental implant treatment to:
  • Replace a single missing tooth,
  • Replace multiple missing teeth (as in implant-supported bridges),
  • Support and stabilize dentures.
However, healthy gums and enough bone in the jaw are needed for this treatment. So that the implant can be held by the jaw. If the amount of bone is not enough or healthy, the implant may not be placed without grafting bone into the area. Grafting is a way to add new bone into the jawbone.

Dental Implant Treatment Step by Step

First Visit: 3 days

  • Step #1: The first step is to take a panoramic and 3D (if necessary) X-ray to determine if dental implant treatment is the right choice.
  • Step #2: During the first phase of the surgery, the implants are placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia.
  • Step #3: There will be stitches for the implant to heal faster. You can have the stitches taken out back home by a local dentist one week after the operation.
  • Step #4: Then, there is a period where the implant bonds with the bone around it. This period is called osseointegration and lasts up to 3-4 months. The bone forms around the implant and holds the implant firmly in its place. During this rest period, temporary crowns, bridges or dentures may be used.

Second Visit: 5-10 days

  • Step #5: After the rest period, you will come back to the clinic to have the abutment attached to the implant. The abutment is the part that connects the dental work (crown, bridge or denture) tooth to the implant. It is typically placed after the osseointegration period. However, in some cases, the placement of the dental implant, abutment and temporary restoration such as crown can be done at the same visit. This is called immediate loading.
  • Step #6: An artificial replacement tooth is created and attached to the abutment. Multiple appointments will be required to properly fit the replacement tooth to the abutment. For a single tooth implant, a dental crown is placed over the abutment. For multiple teeth implants, custom-made bridges and dentures are created to fit the implants.

What are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

There are many advantages of dental implants:

  • Dental implants are the best solution to replace the missing teeth. Once they have been placed, they can function like natural teeth.
  • Implant-supported replacement teeth look natural since they emerge through the gums.
  • Dental implants prevent the bone loss that is likely to occur after tooth loss.
  • They eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures. Dental implants provide the ability to chew even the hard food and to speak with ease, unlike poor-fitting dentures.
  • Dental implants are very strong and durable. They last many years when maintained well.
  • At the dental implant treatment, healthy surrounding teeth are preserved. Dental implants don’t require shaving down other neighboring teeth, as tooth-supported bridges do. Hence, they are the optimal choice for most of the patients.

What are All-On-Four Dental Implants?

If you’re missing multiple teeth, you may think of all-on-four (all-on-4) dental implants. All-on-4 dental implants provide a fixed full-arch prosthesis At this treatment, four dental implants are placed into the jaw. Two of them are straight anterior implants and the other two are implants tilted up to 45º in the posterior. By tilting the posterior implants, available bone is used, and thus bone grafting is avoided. These four implants function as anchors and retain the denture placed over them.

How Must a Dental Implant Be Cared?

Dental implants are placed into the jawbone and look and function like natural teeth. So, they require the same care as natural teeth such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental examinations. With proper care, a dental implant can last a lifetime. We also recommend a regular visit to the dentist for a dental examination.

Is Dental Implant Treatment Painful?

Placing a dental implant is not a more difficult process than extracting a tooth. It is often conducted under local anaesthesia. No pain is felt during the placement. However, just like after tooth extraction, you may feel a mild soreness after the surgery. This soreness can easily be eliminated by pain medications.
